Overview – An Experiential Learning Program in Incredible India

India is raising its image on the world stage, not only as a strategic leader in the field of technology but also for its colorful multi-culture and its boom in media and style. India offers rich and varied avenues of study for the intellectually curious and ambitious minds. So, if your study abroad goals are to expose the students for a better appreciation of an ancient country and at the same time experience a multi cultural environment, then there is simply no better place than India. The NMS Experiential Learning Study Abroad Programs involve both academic and non-academic components. Multiple types of programs are offered with various options

Winning in India

This module is designed to help students get a feel of India and gain insights into what it takes to be successful in the Indian business scenario. The course will cover aspects from the Indian Economy and corporate scenario, as well as offer insights into India’s complex cultural contexts. This general overview would include:

  • The Indian Economy and its impact on the global business environment
  • The leading Industry sectors in India
  • Doing Business in India – what it takes – Entry Strategy
  • Understand cultural sensitivities – How to live, work and enjoy in India
  • Leveraging economic and social contradictions – The Indian Mindset

NMS will also organize company/factory/site visits cutting across industry verticals and also facilitate the University students to interface with the senior executives of the companies during dinner time. Other Courses (applicable for 3 week & 5 week program) Other modules can be selected from a number of courses offered. These could include

  • International Business Environment
  • International Marketing
  • International Finance
  • Cross-cultural, Management

or other courses that are offered at NMS during their visit. If there are specific courses that you would like, we can include them as well. Each student will be loaned one laptop for the entire duration of the program. Textbooks for the course will also be provided. Harvard cases/articles/videos, if required, will also be provided to students. During the program, CXO meetings (including a company visit and a factory visit) will be arranged. Students will be encouraged to interact and network with NMS students.

Semester Program

Term Abroad

  • NMS will deliver 6 courses to the students for a total of 9 credits across 13 weeks (i.e. 1 term)
  • Course titles that are to be covered can be specified by the university. Whenever possible, the students will join first-year or second-year NMS students in coursework already being delivered by NMS.
  • NMS will arrange for a minimum of seven corporate visits, including but not limited to executive visits, company/factory visits within Chennai as well as trips outside of Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.
  • NMS will deliver an orientation program which will address the basic skills on computers, accounting etc and also organize for an Outbound Program. These mandatory, co-curricular activities will not be credit-bearing, though full attendance and participation on the part of students is expected and required for successful completion of the program.
  • NMS will keep track of student participation and report participation levels to the university at the end of the semester.
  • NMS will facilitate the participants in identifying different types of accommodation ranging from dormitory type to service apartment, rented flats, Paying Guest ,luxury apartments and hotels, etc.
  • NMS will also administer assessment and award a transcript to each student with grades.
  • This term abroad will also include the non academic components like Cultural immersion and India experience.

Outbound Program

The Outbound program is designed to help students

  • Discover themselves and possibly better understand their strengths and areas for improvement
  • Get to know their fellow students better and bond as a team
  • Gain new experiences through adventure activities specifically tuned to their comfort levels, and facilitated by trained experts
  • The program is a two day trip to a suitable camp location in a hill station where they will be taken through a clearly planned program combining group activities, moderated group dynamics and exercises.
  • Accommodation during this time will be of camping tents types.

City visits

Separate visits will be organized over the weekends and evenings, in Chennai, covering:

  • A movie hall / multiplex
  • The Beach stretches along the East Coast Road, the main city beaches
  • The City Museum
  • Mahabalipuram – the famous ancient rock temples
  • Other places of historical interest based on the interest of the students

Other cities outside of Chennai, there will be

  • CXO Panel meet
  • Industry visits
  • Shopping experience
  • Visit to key places of historical importance

No classes will be held during weekends, which will enable the students to spend time in experiencing India.

GVSU Program

The NMS Experiential Learning Study Abroad Programs – A 5-week program

Overview

Seidman College of Business from Grand valley State University (GVSU) has collaborated with NMS in offering this “Study in India” program to its Under Graduate and Graduate students. GVSU will also provide pre-departure orientation and facilitate transfer of academic credit for coursework successfully completed in the program (subject to evaluation by the Seidman College of Business faculty). Students participating in the program will maintain their enrollment at GVSU during their educational program abroad. Dates May – June

Program Design

The details below outline the nature and scope of the study abroad program and cover their academic and non-academic components. 5 week program

  • 6 credits offered (2 * 40 contact hours)
    • First 3-credit Course – BUS 301 – International Business and Culture in India (Winning in India): Understanding the India Context (Cultural Context – 20 hours, Economic Landscape and India Strategy – 20 hrs)
    • Second 3-credit course – BUS 499 – Business Independent Study/Project (Field study and/or Consulting Practicum): Two 20 hour modules
  • 4 weeks in Chennai
    • Academic work, Local sight-seeing, Company visits
  • Fifth week multi-city tour culminating in Delhi, from where students will depart from India

Academics

BUS 301 – International Business and Culture in India (Winning in India) This module is designed to help students get a feel of India and gain insights into what it takes to be successful in the Indian business scenario. Other Courses BUS 499 – Independent Study/Project (Field Study and/or Consulting Practicum): The topics for Field study and or Consulting Practicum will be based upon the student interests. It will be communicated to NMS along with the student profiles on or before March 31st of the year. The National Management School will confirm the details of the Field study and/ or Consulting Practicum by April 30th of the year. Students are to be adequately briefed about the topic and should prepare themselves with all relevant documents before landing in India. Each student will be loaned one laptop for the entire duration of the program. Textbooks for the course will also be provided. Harvard cases/articles/videos, if required, will also be provided to students. During the program, meetings with Chief Executive Officers (including a company visit and a factory visit) will be arranged. Students will be encouraged to interact and network with NMS students.

Non-academic

1) Pre-Departure Video Conference Orientation Before students depart for India, this one hour Video Conference session will help them with an overview which will address points on:

  • What they should expect in India
  • Pre-departure checklist / suggestions
  • Instructions on what they should do when they arrive in India
  • Clarifications on food, health concerns, vaccinations, medicine etc
  • Any other questions / concerns they may have

2) General Cultural Immersion The General Cultural Immersion Program will include:

  • Fragrance of India – A Traditional Welcome
  • Know India Series – A cross-cultural overview of India
  • Hearing Indian Beats – Dance and Music Appreciation
  • India: A sight and insight – Walk-through Experience
  • Walk into an Indian Kitchen – The quintessential courtyard
  • A touch and Feel of India – Fabric of India
  • A Real Taste of India – Indian Food

3) Chennai one-day City Tour

  • “Buzz of Traditional Tamil people”(Temple, Bazaar, Visit stores for Indian silk and artifacts)
  • Drive down Marina Beach up to War memorial (Santhome Basilica and all old English architecture)
  • Sit-down South Indian meal at “Hotel New Woodlands” over a discussion on various aspects of life in Chennai
  • A look into the infrastructure development in new Chennai
  • Visit to the new Chennai “Shopping Mall”

4) Chennai Visits Separate visits will be organized over the weekends and evenings, in Chennai, covering:

  • A movie hall / multiplex
  • The Beach stretches along the East Coast Road, the main city beaches
  • The City Museum
  • Mahabalipuram – the famous ancient rock temples
  • Other places of historical interest based on the interest of the students

Classes are generally between 9 am and 6 pm (Monday – Friday). All evenings are free for such activities 5) Multi- city tour The city tour will cover Mumbai, Agra, and New Delhi. The students will travel by air from Chennai to Mumbai; Mumbai to Delhi, Delhi to Agra and then to Delhi by road. Students will be able to see the Taj Magal at Agra. 6) Housing

  • Provide Accommodation with the following amenities: Air-conditioned double occupancy rooms with attached bathroom Fridge, coffee pot, iron with, table, TV with cable, Internet, provision for paid laundry services
  • Recreation center with swimming pool, gym and paid access to SPA

7) Transport The transportation facility offered to students during the program will cover:

  • Airport transfers (one in each direction for the entire group)
  • Conveyance within Chennai
  • Shuttle from student housing to campus and back
  • All visits to companies in Chennai
  • Trips to cities included in the multi-city tours (flights, bus, van etc)
  • All local conveyance within the cities

All transportation is provided in an air-conditioned vehicle. Not all students in the group may be in the same vehicle. 8) Meals The meal plan for the program includes Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and 2 beverages. Dinner may include one chicken dish. The meals offered are Indian cuisine. Some meals may include Chinese or Italian dishes. Out of the 5 week program duration there are 2 weekends, where students are responsible for their own meals. However, suggestions on local restaurants will be offered. 9) Coordinator A dedicated NMS coordinator will be available right through the program to assist students with their requirements during their stay in India. 10) Other Activities (Optional) NMS may be able to offer some additional activities / programs at an extra cost if students are interested.

Logistics

1) Transportation The transportation facility offered to students during the program will cover:

  • Airport transfers (one in each direction for the entire group)
  • Conveyance within Chennai
  • Shuttle from hotel to campus and back
  • All visits to companies in Chennai
  • Trips to cities included in the inter-city tours
  • Other local conveyance within the cities by the students for shopping etc should be borne by the students/participants themselves

All transport is provided in an air-conditioned vehicle. Not all students in the group may be in the same vehicle. 2) Meals The meal plan for the program includes Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The meals offered are Indian cuisine. We may be able to include some Chinese or Italian dishes. There will be some power dinner in couple of evenings and some will be on their own. 3) Coordinator A dedicated coordinator will be made available right through the program to address the requirements during the stay in India. 4) Accommodation NMS is located on the IT Corridor of Chennai which is almost 30 kilometers away from the main city. There will be two options provided as far the hotels to stay for the students during their stay in Chennai .

  • Hotel closer to NMS , which will cut down the travel time and also cost effective
  • Hotel in the city which will be with 3-4 star facility
